Recently, we reported that the National lotteries board intend to launch an investigation into illegal SMS competitions. This week we will elaborate a bit on premium rated SMS competitions in South Africa and how to go about the design of an acceptable competition, seeing that I am getting phone calls from interested parties wanting us to arrange such promotions/competitions.

All WASPs (Wireless application service provider) belong to WASPA - the wireless application service provider association in South Africa. WASPA has a code of conduct (PDF) to which all members must adhere.

So rules and regulations are in place when one look at the structure of the industry in South Africa.

Avoiding lotteries board investigation and or non-qualification when you run a competition is going to take some work when designing a promotion/competition.

Step 1:
Read the above code of conduct from WASPA. Does the competition comply with the WASPA code of conduct?
Step 2:
Read and understand what is considered to be a lottery by the lotteries act. (you might need to consult a lawyer in this case)
Step 3:
Ask yourself the following questions to define the nature of the promotion:

Is this an entry with the change of winning a prize? (Lottery) If yes, does it comply to any of the exceptions of the lotteries act? Example: charitable lottery run by an organization registered with the NLB. If yes, case solved. If no, please move on to the next point.

Is this a promotional competition? I.e. is the core of the competition based on the sale of a product or service with the additional incentive to enter a competition by sending a SMS to a premium number? If so, then yes, it is a valid promotional competition. Sending a SMS to a premium number to win something is not considered to be a promotional competition as there is no product or service involved.

If the answer to no.2 is yes, then you should ask yourself what the cost of the entry is. Verification and tracking services of entries into the competition could be charged for and that might be acceptable to work payment for services into the price of the entry fee. Charging R 10 or R 30 per entry is however another story altogether.

The networks, at time of the release going to print, were not available for comment. It will be interesting to see what the outcome of all of this would be. Running a premium rated SMS competition is not as clear cut as in the past due to these factors coming into play. Regardless, the belt is being tightened in South Africa regardless of the success and contributions premium rated SMS made to charities and the fact that the use of premium rated SMS is accepted worldwide.

It is advised to write a project proposal and submit to it your WASP or the NLB for approval prior to running the competition.

Mobile fitness application for mobile phones!!!

About 10 years ago, I was a full-time athlete doing tri-athlons aiming to join the SA team. Covering 3 disciplines entailed quite a heavy training schedule.

I remember back then the use of heart monitors which athletes strapped around their chests became popular. It was quite cool as you could train at 60% or 30% monitoring your heart rate all the way. Some of us were not that lucky as the equipment was quite expensive and we had to pace and monitor ourselves the old fashioned way in our training schedules.

I read today that Bones in motion, a Texas based company, developed an application for mobile phones called - BiM Active, mobile fitness application.

This mobile application allows cyclists, runners and walkers to capture their activities in real-time on their mobile phones. It uses GPS and works on Nextel and Sprint phones.

BiM Active basically monitors activity through sound alerts. When the athlete arrives back home, he/she could visit a web portal where their data could be uploaded and discussed with fellow athletes.

At this stage it monitors the distance, speed/pace, location, elevation and calories burned during the activity logged - information collected could be viewed, shared and logged. All this for a mere $ 9.99 per month!!

If this application could be rolled out world-wide and especially to countries like South Africa where we enjoy a warm climate, they could make a killing.

South African NLB to investigate illegal SMS competitions

The South African National lotteries board announced an investigation into illegalSMS competitions where entrants are required to use their cell phones to enter the competition and are charged more than the normal cost of a sms.

According to the board mobile phone users may not be charged more than the cost of a normal SMS (R 1-50) to enter a competition.

The lotteries watchdog said it noticed an increase in illegal lotteries under the guise of a competition taking place.

Sershan Naidoo, NLB spokesperson said legitimate lotteries identified by the act included society lotteries run by non-profit organisations to raise funds, private lotteries among people who work or live together and promotional competitions conducted to encourage the sale of goods or services.

Lotteries where more than R10 000 would be raised through ticket sales or lotteries raising more than this amount at bazaars, dinners or similar events had to be registered with the National lottery board.

Search engine/browser/ mobile war starts

On December 5, we contemplated whether a new Browser/Search engine / mobile war is starting as Yahoo, Google and FirefoxIE all launched mobile-type services. After the following I am convinced that this war actually started and now the race is on for this market segment.

Renewing a contract with the subsequent upgrading to a new handset is always fun as one have a new "toy" to explore.

As part of my mobile phone contract, I recently upgraded my mobile phone to a Nokia 6680, which is G3 compatible and has some of the latest technologies available. (I also needed this handset to play around with our bar code SMS where the handset acts as a scanner....) Browsing around exploring the latest features, I discovered that the default browser for the Nokia 6680 is Opera.....hmmm good move I thought and interesting development.

I also learned that Google made a deal with Opera to become the default search....

On January 6, Google announced an alliance with Motorola which will enable users easy access to Google via Motorola handsets.

At the same time Yahoo launched Yahoo!Go

Yahoo!Go is a suite of products which allows users mail, messenger, address book photos and movies on their handsets. It is a system where you could access all your information stored at Yahoo! through your mobile phone, laptop or TV.

This facility is only available for the Nokia 60 series at this stage. Network operators are still limited. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and some networks in the US are the only ones on the list at this stage. Note that these networks are all premium networks, operating on interconnect fees so there is a lot of money going around.....the poor end user's phone bill.....

You are required to have access to EDGE, G3 or GPRS in order to use the service.

It is quite clear that there is no cost for the applications but download and the usage obviously provides revenue share between the networks and Y!

I think it is fair to say that Y! is one up on Google here, but it would be interesting to see Google's next move.

In conclusion it seems as if the mobile web convergence War started. At the end of the day it is going to be the company that offers the most applications at the lowest price to the end users.

Whether this will go global or not is a good question and that will most likely depend on handset conversion and network willingness to share revenue with the search engines and browsers.

RSS via SMS by Y!

RSS + SMS launched by Yahoo was reported by Russel Beatie's on his blog on 1 December.

Strange that we looked at the developments in the browser SMS world on 2 December too.

What Yahoo did, was to launch a service where subscribers could opt in to receive updates of the RSS feeds they are watching.

You have the choice to sign up for alerts to be sent to a mobile phone or a pager and you could set the amount of messages you want to receive a day. The service is limited to 7 networks in the US only at this stage.

This news was received with mixed feelings and comments on Beatie's blog. US residents felt that it might be just antoher way to swamp their inboxes - I think they forget that one have the choice to sign up or not.

Another mystery to those that commented was how it was possible to do this for free. Simple - revenue share.

Some other comments included that it is not fair of Yahoo to launch this in the US only, but in response to that:

In the US subscribers pay for incoming and outgoing messages. If Yahoo is getting revenue share from the networks, then they get more revenue share.

This is only beta so maybe when it works they will roll it out in other countries.

I am not too sure if the general public will go for this but in my opinion it will definitely be popular among media members.

In my personal opinion I would just like to see WAP bookmarking included in the RSS which at this stage is limited to the first 120/160 characters of the RSS feed.

It would be much easier to follow a url from the alert for detailed news.

MTN SA to fight back for the subscriber market and expand operations in Africa

MTN expressed that they are "unhappy" with their subscriber growth performance in the last 6 months leading to September 30.

MTN's subscriber base was reported at 32% (20,6 million) in a 90 day review window. They were disappointed with the South African market though as the subscriber base increased a mere 12% (8.9 million) in the last 6 months. A loss in the prepaid market was also reported.

Vodacom reported a 40% year-on-year growth to 15,8 million domestic customers.

This implied that the non South African subscribers at MTN outstripped the local market. 56% of its customers are now residing in Nigeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, Rwanda, Swaziland or Zambia.

SMS continued to dominate the data end of the business contributing 96% of total data revenue. EDGE and 3G rollout will continue during 2006.

They expect the South African subscriber base to grow to 41 million Sim users by 2009 with the Nigerian market reaching 25-30 million by 2009. MTN paid €300 million for a license in Iran and will be spending another €150 million to capitalize Irancel. MTN has 49% stake in Irancel.

Browser SMS - the next big thing??

I read today that Yahoo and its internet partner SBC, (largest telecoms provider in the US) merged with AT&T. This now gives Yahoo access to a worldwide fiber network.

Are they just wanting to launch Yahoo in other countries or is there more to this than what we expect? Is Yahoo sending us a message that they are about to move totally into converged technologies? Partnering with telco's that allows for worldwide fiber backbones are surely the way to go. AT&T are in the mobile business as well - surely makes sense not just to expand services into a worldwide roll-out, at the same time capturing converged technologies.

Let's take a look at what they already have available on the SMS side of the business:

They already have pc to mobile SMS even though it is limited to 7 networks in the US only and only allows for 120 characters (they state that text messages could contain up to 140 characters).

They also allow for mobile blogging where users could send a post via their mobile to their Yahoo 360 blog.

There are other services available such as photos, games etc.

If we take a look at what the other browsers are doing as far as mobile convergence is concerned, you will note the following:

FirefoxIE re-launched their FirefoxIE SMS Messenger yesterday with a press release that elicited quite a response from the media.

submitdate - the time when message was submitted to our server
Delivdate – is the time stamp when message is submitted. Here the point to note is that since the SMSCs are all across world, sometimes the time stamp may contain entry hours before or after the submit date. However the same is not because of delay but because of difference in the time zones of SMSC we are connecting to.
